High Spirits/New Semester
Nothing quite equals starting a new semester on the same week that we experience the excitement of Spirit Week, with dress attire that transformed our young scholars into their favorite animals, sports teams and alter-egos.  The building was a sea of yellow, blue, green, and red class colors.  The energy and excitement was palatable, culminating in an afternoon of competition among the 4 grades, as they vied for supremacy in the Harry Potter Tri-wizard version of Winter Olympics.  The competition, fortunately, resulted in a win by the seniors.  As the first graduating class they would have been devastated to lose at their last Winter Olympics.  The spirit of competition is already in place as underclassmen plan strategies to rule supreme in 2013.  The kids had fun, and teachers were wonderful participants in supporting the efforts of Student Council, under the leadership of Ms. Szabo.

Students also had a great time at the White-Out Dance on Friday night.  Underclassmen especially enjoyed the line dancing and participating in a memorable evening with friends.

An Enrichment Activity

Alycia Hutchisson, a Peace Corp volunteer prepared a wonderful presentation for our freshmen last month.  Alycia shared her experiences in South Africa during her volunteer years, 2006-2008.  She had the opportunity recently to return to South Africa and update herself and our students on the status of the various families and the children she had met.  Through a PowerPoint presentation, she created a vivid picture of the lives that lack so many of the comforts and medical advances we enjoy.  However, she also conveyed the themes of our common humanity and the satisfaction we receive by helping others.

Congratulations to our hard working students.

Vocal Music News

Visual Art News
The annual Scholastics Art Awards Ceremony for the Macomb, St. Clair, and Lapeer regions was held at MCC on Jan. 30. Students from these counties entered their best works of art.  There were 1,753 high school entries total and only 482 were chosen to be in the exhibition.  Angela Furton, Katie Choike, Danusia Cherstylo, and Alicia Robinson where among those chosen! Angela submitted a senior art portfolio along with 34 other seniors from the region.  Only 16 portfolios were chosen and of those 16, Angela received one of the highest honors for her work, the Gold Key.  Katie Choike also received a Gold Key and Danusia received a Silver Key.  Angela’s portfolio and Katie’s painting will go on to compete nationally next month.  The girls also won a one-day workshop at the General Motors Design Center in Warren where they will learn about CGI imagery and 3-D auto design.  Congratulations to our fine artists!

CAS Deadline
Seniors must submit all evidence relative to the CAS learning outcomes to their CAS advisors by Friday, February 3.  Additionally, the final CAS reflection and the CAS journal will be due to their IB2 History teachers on February 2 or 3.

EE In-Service
Mr. Alwardt in-serviced the entire Junior Class on the process that students will use to successfully fulfill the Extended Essay requirement.  Students are selecting topics and will meet soon with their mentors.  Juniors understand that they will be researching their area of interest, developing an appropriate research question, creating outlines and identifying sources.  Students will have the opportunity to work on their outlining in April and on the actual writing of their essays on May 29 and June 1.

Tutoring Opportunities
Student volunteers from the IAM will assist in a Free ELL After School Bilingual Tutoring Program.  The tutoring will be available from January 23 through June 6, at the Macomb Intermediate School District.  The free sessions offer ELL students extra support in various content areas.  Support staff who speak different languages will also be available to assist.

Preparing for the ACT

On Thursday, February 3, juniors will take a practice ACT, score the test, and identify areas of strength and weakness.  The testing conditions will be somewhat similar to those the students will have on March 6 when they actually take the ACT.  Please support their efforts by viewing their results and suggesting practice books and websites for assistance.
